Friedrich Engels’s Irish partner Mary Burns – by Jenny Farrell (People’s World) 25 Nov 2020

A statue in verse for Friedrich Engels’s partner Mary Burns A young Friedrich Engels.

Friedrich Engels, whose 200th birthday falls on November 28, 2020, had a very personal connection with Ireland. The moment he set foot in Manchester, in 1843, sent by his father to help run the family textile factory, he met the then 20-year-old Mary Burns, daughter of an Irish dyer, and herself a worker in the Engels-owned Victoria Mills. In 1845, Mary accompanied Engels to Brussels; by 1846, he refers to her as “my wife” in a letter.

In Brussels, they both attended political meetings and met Engels’s friend, the revolutionary German poet Georg Weerth, who had a great interest in Ireland. Weerth wrote the poem “Mary,” one of the few contemporary documents about her:

Mary Burns

Mary

From Ireland with the tide she came,
She came from Tipperary:
“Oranges, fresh and good for sale”
So cried our lassie Mary.
And Moor and Persian and Brown,
Jews, Gentiles overwrought—
All people of the trading town,
They came and bought, and bought….

And with the money that she gained
For juicy, golden mandrines,
She hurried home determined
Her face in wrathful lines.
She took the money, safe it kept;
Treasured ’til January,
To Ireland fast and sure she sent
The money, so did Mary.

’Tis for my land’s salvation,
I give this to your coffers!
Arise, and whet your weapons.
Stir up the ancient hatreds!
The Rose of England strives to choke
Shamrock of Tipperary
Warm greetings to the best of blokes,
O’Connell, from our Mary.

(translation Jenny Farrell)

According to Weerth, Mary was a street fruit seller, not a factory worker but, of course, she could have been both. She was a spirited young Irish patriot, whose family had crossed the Irish Sea to work in the satanic mills of Manchester. As the 24-year-old Engels noted in The Condition of the Working Class in England (1845): “The rapid extension of English industry could not have taken place if England had not possessed in the numerous and impoverished population of Ireland a reserve at command.”

The Irish also brought a tradition of struggle. Many got involved in trade unionism and Feargus O’Connor, highly regarded by Marx and Engels for his class understanding, was elected to Parliament in 1847, as the first Chartist.

There can be little doubt that Mary Burns was instrumental in introducing Engels to the horrendous conditions of the Manchester proletariat. She knew intimately the conditions of families at work and in their typhus- and cholera-stricken shacks.

The situation in proletarian families led Engels much later to note in The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State (1884): “now that large-scale industry has taken the wife out of the home onto the labor market and into the factory, and made her often the bread-winner of the family, no basis for any kind of male supremacy is left in the proletarian household—except, perhaps, for something of the brutality towards women that has spread since the introduction of monogamy.”

Engels understood marriage and family as directly linked to the propertied class system, whereby the accumulation of wealth led to formal marriage, strict monogamy on the part of women, and female subjugation. “[I]n proportion as wealth increased, it made the man’s position in the family more important than the woman’s, and on the other hand created an impulse to exploit this strengthened position in order to overthrow, in favor of his children, the traditional order of inheritance. This, however, was impossible so long as descent was reckoned according to mother-right. Mother-right, therefore, had to be overthrown and overthrown it was.

“The overthrow of mother-right was the world historical defeat of the female sex. The man took command in the home also; the woman was degraded and reduced to servitude, she became the slave of his lust and a mere instrument for the production of children.”

Engels decided never to marry. He lived first with Mary Burns, and following her early death, with her sister Lydia (Lizzie) as his partners. In order to do so, he effectively led a double life. One, in an official residence as a factory manager, the other, in the suburban cottage he rented under an alias for Mary and Lizzie, his real home.

In 1856, Engels and Mary visited Ireland together. Following this trip, he wrote to Marx, “Ireland may be regarded as England’s first colony” and “I never thought that famine could have such a tangible reality.”

Both Mary and Lizzie were very involved with Irish liberation and supported the Fenian struggle for an independent Ireland. Aged only 40, Mary died suddenly on January 8, 1863. She had been Engels’s partner for 20 years. He was deeply shaken by Marx’s inability to respond compassionately; it nearly broke their friendship.

After Mary’s death, Engels and Lizzie moved in together. This is the house Marx visited a number of times, as did his daughter Eleanor. Eleanor struck up a deep friendship with Lizzie and through her became an Irish patriot. Lizzie was a member of the Fenian Society, and Engels describes her as an “Irish revolutionary.” There are indications that Lizzie joined the First International soon after its foundation in 1864.

In 1867, when two Fenians, Colonel Kelly and Captain Deasy, also veterans of the U.S. Civil War, were captured by Manchester police to be brought to trial, Lizzie became involved in the ultimately unsuccessful plot to rescue them. Paul Lafarge suggests she may even have hidden them briefly. Following their execution, Engels wrote to Marx, “So yesterday morning the Tories…accomplished the final act of separation between England and Ireland. The only thing that the Fenians still lacked were martyrs.” Engels and Marx, while staunch supporters of Irish emancipation, were no devotees of the Fenians. In both the Marx and Engels/Burns households, the women expressed their support of the Fenians by wearing green ribbons with black for mourning.

In September 1869, Lizzie, Engels, and the 14-year-old Eleanor Marx spent three weeks in Ireland. Their visit coincided with a revival of the liberation movement, sparked by the demand for an amnesty for the Fenians held in British jails. Tens of thousands of people were out on the streets of Dublin and Limerick. Lizzie and Eleanor “came back even hiberniores than they had been before they left.” Engels formed a plan to write a comprehensive study of Ireland and began researching its history.

Lizzie and Engels moved to London, 122 Regents Park Road, Primrose Hill, in September 1870, just 10 minutes’ walk from Marx. This house became a center for the socialist movement. Lizzie had been unwell for quite some time and died on September 12, 1878. A measure of Engels’s love may be seen in his marrying Lizzie on the night of her death, to put her at ease. On her death certificate, her occupation is given as a former cotton spinner. In a letter, Engels writes to Julie Bebel (1843-1910, the wife of August Bebel): “She was of genuine Irish proletarian stock and her passionate, innate feeling for her class was of far greater importance to me and stood me in better stead at all critical moments to a greater extent than all the pseudo-intellectual and clever-clever ‘finely educated’ and ‘delicate’ bourgeois daughters could have done.”

Four Hours of Graphic Meandering With King Kong, Biden, and Stalin – 3:57 am Tuesday

I get lots of sleep, lots of protein, and lots of caffeine. I awoke at about 11pm last night after a long sleep. I sleep when I want. When it’s cold, I sleep more. I don’t heat when I want. That costs money. Anyway, I reheated coffee and pictures came to my head.

Combinations of pictures I already had to fit situations I picture.

Who puts tools on a flag?

Kicked Off Twitter – Cancelled on Youtube – Silenced For Seven Days Just Before the Election on Reddit

Audio of Article – Mp3

Cancel me? Fire me? Tell me to move along with that revolutionary newspaper. Take my picture in front of the company gate. Haul me off in handcuffs for pasting leaflets on telephone poles.

Call me spam, call me propaganda, tell me I am derivative, say I’m crazy. Tell me to move along, no one wants to hear that here. Ha.

This is a story that is going to be told.

The UK band The Clash sang, “Rights, know your rights, you have the right to freedom of speech, as long as you are not stupid enough to try it!”

I was kicked off Youtube despite being a paying Premium member for copyright violations that I should have fought because they were Fair Use educational and parody clips of others videos. I got kicked off Youtube years ago for music copyright violations. I stopped doing that and when I got back on Youtube I made silent movies and then used Youtube provided music that was royalty free for use. But, I used clips of other peoples works with new music.

(I have re-uploaded videos I had on Youtube to Dailymotion video sharing site – but I didn’t get the Youtube music versions)

The system automatically kicked me off when two or three people complained on the same day. I should have appealed, I guess, but, I have videos here on WordPress and I am not bothered by censors. When I have sold working class leftist newspapers on the street and a cop told me to move along, I just moved along. I went to another corner.

So, yeah, I have tried ‘freedom of speech’ and ‘freedom of the press’ and ‘freedom to write’ there is lots, and none, in certain measures….. And…. I just keep on.

In the past I was banned from Boston’s ‘free media’ platform Boston Indymedia. https://archive.is/BOM24

The graphic above from the Boston Indymedia website is a parody story about a ‘global warming’ protest being cancelled because Boston’s weather was frigidly cold. I posted it quickly on Boston Indymedia and got the link to paste in archive.org to get an online copy preserved. When the link was made and the copy visible, I went back to Boston Indymedia and deleted my satire post.

When I wondered if they would censor everything I posted I decided to write an article defending ‘insect rights.’ I looked online for some line drawings in black and white and found an article defending insect rights seriously. So, I posted that on Boston Indymedia under a different name. There was no problem with that idiotic expression of a political view. But, the ideas I expressed….

But, Boston Indymedia has been closed down. Hardly anyone posted there.

In the past I also got kicked off Craigslist when I posted in their Local Politics section, or Rants and Raves. If I post something now, it is flagged off somehow within minutes. A lot of people simply don’t like what I write, what I say, what I distribute in newspaper form, what I put up as leaflets. But, that is to be expected.

I signed up for a social media alternative site Parler.

I

I also signed up for something called Gab. Both Parler and Gab – https://gab.com/home hope to be alternative to what they see as Democratic Party main stream media liberals and their censorship called ‘deplatforming.’ Radical Liberals can hold two contradictory ideas in their head. They believe in ‘free speech’ but they also believe in eliminating opponents speech and call it ‘deplatforming.’

I have the feeling that no one has seen anything I posted on Gab or Parler. Or, maybe there was one ‘like.’ So at least someone saw something. (Update: No, people do see things posted on both sites)

Incredibly when I shared pro-labor union posts I made on Parler on a Reditt subreddit dedicated to ‘watching’ Parler ‘right wingers’ people wrote that the Parler Right Wingers would give me death threats. I got no death threats, or any anti-union comments at all.

I was getting more views on Twitter before I got kicked off. I didn’t really understand the system the way I did Reddit, or Youtube, or blogs. But I started posting links to news stories and blog posts I made, and posted pictures I took or found and liked, or drawings I made. I got about 3,000 views a month. I was getting a lot more than that on Reddit or WordPress with a blog, or Blogger with special interest blogs I write and edit.

I started posting more during the Democratic primary season and felt that I was given more freedom on Twitter than on Reddit. On Reddit I would get banned from subreddit after subreddit, day after day as I simply tried to post articles in many places.

I started to get more views on Twitter and for the final month got 50,000. But, I made fun of Senator E. Warren. When she complained that Bernie Sanders secretly told her that ‘girls can’t be president’ I posted a line drawing of her. The caption was, “He undressed me with his eyes.” That’s it. The drawing was neutral.

“He undressed me with his eyes”

Some people call a repeat message online ‘spam.’ I have put leaflets on telephone poles as I walked through town. The same message, on pole after pole. Perhaps a call to a demonstration, or support for a strike, or the notice of a socialist meeting – I was arrested in Cambridge, Massachusetts for putting up leaflets advertising a meeting. Stopped on the street, placed in handcuffs, seated in a van, locked in a cell, I had broken the rules. It was true. The message I wanted to spread was what they were really after. I wasn’t putting up leaflets for a tarot card reader.

Okay, guilty as charged. The police did not beat me up. I wasn’t held for days. I paid a modest fine. I moved on and stopped using wheat paste.

The thing about putting up lots of leaflets on lots of telephone poles is that one never knows who will see the message. If I put up thirty in one afternoon, perhaps ten were ripped down in minutes. Others stayed up and people walked by oblivious to the paper on a pole. But… there is a chance that one person stopped and read and thought, someone might take the leaflet down and put it in their pocket. I have done that in the past.

So putting a message online were someone can see it has a power, however great, or small, or virtually nonexistent.

Hope springs eternal.

I find that simply formatting a thought I have in the morning about the days news and putting it online gives me a chance to think through my own thought. The creation of the words, and arrangement of images sometimes, is as utilitarian as the product itself.

I used to like walking alone around an area with a stack of leaflets and tape and tacks and a plan of which streets I would walk up and which ones down. I’d have a chance to get lost in my own thoughts as I walked quietly.

I’m not so quiet as I write online media posts and blog entries, there can be music on or a podcast, or news talk show in the background. And…. writing and photo editing is different from walking with leaflets and tacks and an eye for an empty space to tape a message.

Reddit – r/CommunismMemes – Topic – Stalin – November Days – 2020

Any consideration of what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the Soviet Union must address Stalin. Stalin… the gravedigger of the revolution.

So I created a few graphic combinations. I worked at McDonald’s in the past. I know how to make hamburgers and fries and serve up Happy Meals while adding Stalin.

How many Stalinists did it take to destroy the first Worker’s State? Once people were afraid to stop clapping for Stalin, now people are afraid that if they stop laughing at Stalin…

I’m tired of people who are endlessly excited about ‘black holes’ – Forty years of breathless announcements

Sometimes the person doing the reporting is in there forties and must have grown up hearing about Black Holes, yet, they report as if they are bouncing in their chairs with a novel discovery.

Follow RT on Astronomers believe they are getting a glimpse of the structure of a black hole, after the Hubble Space Telescope spotted a collection of rays and shadows beaming out from the center of a galaxy millions of light-years away.

Black holes are the universe’s greatest monsters, rapidly consuming everything in their vicinity. Their gravity is so powerful that not even light can escape them, an extraordinary fact which also makes them invisible to us and thus incredibly hard to study.

However, experts have noticed vast shadows and narrow, bright rays stretching out from the center of the galaxy IC 5063, as if something enormous is standing in the way of the intense light. Black hole’s structure possibly glimpsed as dust ring casts shadows and rays far across space Bright rays and dark shadows coming from the blazing core of the galaxy IC 5063. © NASA, ESA, STScI and W.P. Maksym (CfA)

Experts believe this could be a black hole in the heart of the galaxy casting its shadow into space, and a quirk of alignment may be allowing them a glimpse of its structure.

Some shafts of light penetrate the gaps in the dust ring, creating bright rays that resemble the beams of light that can be seen radiating from the sun at sunset.

“We think we’ve found evidence that there is probably dust all over the galaxy scattering light from the accreting black hole in the galaxy’s active nucleus, and that the light can illuminate almost the whole galaxy,” explained astronomer Peter Maksym of the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

Because scientists have never witnessed this phenomenon before, it may take them some time to definitively prove that a black hole is causing the strange shadows and beams. However, the development presents a tantalizing scientific discovery and a rich opportunity for further research.RT Illustration depicting explanation for the mysterious bright rays and dark shadows emanating from IC 5063. © NASA, ESA, and Z. I Created A Few Graphics For r/CommunismMemes on Reddit

I got thousands of upvotes and probably many more views for a picture I downloaded a few years ago.

Sunset or Sunrise

I took something by Keith Haring that subway wall scraller from decades past.

I added the ‘hammer and sickle’ to a girl in a storm’s umbrella.

Yesterday I spent some time planting a Soviet emblem on the umbrella of a woman walking in Paris as I listened to music.

Just now, I put these two images together to create something new. I have put many leaflets on telephone poles over the years. Usually the leaflets I taped to poles were for communist meetings or protests. What does an image alone do?

And finally, a t-shirt design.

US Space Force Now in Charge of the Secret X-37B Space Plane – By Oriana Pawlyk (Military.com) 5 Nov 2020

The U.S. Space Force has created a unit dedicated solely to orbital warfare — and it includes the secret experimental X-37B space plane.

Space Force members overseeing the unmanned spacecraft are part of the newly established mission delta unit known as Delta 9, according to the service. The Drive was first to point out that the X-37B, previously under the purview of the Air Force, has found a new home.

Delta 9’s Detachment 1 “oversees operations of the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle, an experimental program designed to demonstrate technologies for a reliable, reusable, unmanned space test platform for the U.S. Space Force,” according to the unit’s fact sheet.

The Space Force is in the process of standing up its three primary field commands and its subordinate units transferring from the Air Force: Space Operations Command, Space Systems Command and Space Training and Readiness Command, which will be responsible for training space professionals; acquiring space systems from industry; and supporting combatant commanders with space force personnel and capabilities.

Space Operations Command was activated last month during a ceremony at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

Under the field commands are deltas and squadrons, according to the Space Force’s command hierarchy.

Nine Space Deltas fall under Space Operations Command, according to a chart published last week. Delta 9 consists of three active-duty squadrons headquartered at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado: 1st Space Operations Squadron, 3rd Space Operations Squadron and 750th Operations Support Squadron, along with Detachment 1. The three squadrons conduct “protect-and-defend operations from space and provide response options to deter and defeat adversary threats in space,” according to the chart.

Since 2010, the X-37B has been used to explore the practicalities and risks of “reusable space vehicle technologies,” according to the Air Force. The low-earth orbit vehicle, which often carries classified payloads, completed its fifth unmanned space mission last year, spending 780 days in space and breaking the previous record of 718 days. The test vehicle can autonomously re-enter the atmosphere and land on a flight line.

In May, the X-37B launched for its sixth mission from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, to conduct operations for the Space Force, NASA and other agencies, Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett said at the time.

“This important mission will host more experiments than any prior X-37B flight, including two NASA experiments,” she told viewers during a conference hosted by the Space Foundation.

One NASA experiment will “study the results of radiation and other space effects on [specific] materials,” while the other will research “ambient space radiation” effects on seeds used to grow food, Barrett said.

The X-37B also carried the FalconSat-8, a small satellite developed by the U.S. Air Force Academy and sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory, with “five experimental payloads,” officials said. The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory also sent up testing materials used to turn solar power into radio frequency microwave energy, which could then be transmitted to the ground.

Tarot – Election Day Prediction – What Will Happen Across the US?

I posted this in the morning as I listened to news and looked out the window to the sun in the trees. The swords where a symbol of the fighters in medieval society, like knights and soldiers and military leaders. So six swords… what does that mean? Six troubles to fight? Six days till the winner of the US 2020 election is known? Six weeks of rioting and burning and looting? Six months for the US to experience chaos that men flee with women and children? Who knows.

I posted the image online here, and also on Reddit. On one subreddit r/Tarot I got upvotes and comments. But after two hours my post was removed. I did not have the proper three card spread, or proper method of Tarot ritual or something. Perhaps the card predicted that I would be kicked out and shut down. I can always predict that, I don’t need Tarot to see that future, that past, and that present.
